Dr. Kohse studied Chemistry and Medicine at the universities of Bochum, Essen, Ulm and Tübingen (Germany). He was resident in Internal Medicine (Nephrology) at the University Hospital of Ulm, followed by a residency in Clinical Pathology (Laboratory Medicine) at the Robert-Bosch-Hospital Stuttgart (Germany), academic hospital for the University of Tübingen. As Postdoctoral Fellow, he worked at the Department of Pharmacology and Medicine, Stanford University Medical School (USA), in the laboratory of Prof. Ferid Murad. Past research concerned projects on muscle biochemistry, development of immunoassays, carnitine metabolism in renal disease, adrenergic receptors, cardiac natriuretic peptides, and quality management in the clinical laboratory.
Dr. Kohse is registered as Clinical Chemist by the German Society of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine, Clinical Pathologist (“Facharzt für Laboratoriumsmedizin”) by the German Medical Association, and European Specialist in Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine (EurClinChem). His last position has been Director of the Institute for Laboratory Diagnostics and Microbiology, Klinikum Oldenburg – University Medicine Oldenburg (Germany), and Professor for Clinical Chemistry and Pathobiochemistry at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg, where he also held the position as Dean of Education.
He is an active member in the following Scientific Societies: German Society for Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine, American Association for Clinical Chemistry, German Society for Biological Chemistry, and German Society of Chemists.
Dr. Kohse has served the national and international Laboratory Medicine Community in many positions, such as President of the International Association of Pediatric Laboratory Medicine, Board Member and Chair of the IFCC Task Force on Pediatric Laboratory Medicine, Treasurer of the European Communities Confederation of Clinical Chemistry ("EC4", the predecessor of EFLM), Secretary of the German Society for Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine, and Treasurer of the European Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine.
Moreover, he has been or still is actively involved in scientific functions such as Managing Editor of the Journal of the German Society for Clinical Chemistry, Associate Editor of the “Journal of Laboratory Medicine”, referee for the accreditation of clinical chemistry laboratories (ZLG, Germany), reviewer for “Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine”, and Deputy Director of the External Quality Control Program (Ring Surveys in Clinical Chemistry, appointed by the German Medical Association).
